چکیده
We propose that boundary tones are best understood as derived from the interaction of constraints introduce at certain levels prosodic hierarchy and govern alignment those to segmental material. On this decomposition classic notion a tone, we expect find languages in which tone introduced by constituent surfaces away edge constituent. refer these 'mobile' tones. Informed quantitative analysis pitch contours, argue Blackfoot is mobile language. provide grammar account for pattern, where L word before H docked stress syllable, situate within mini-typology predicted re-ranking proposed constraints.

A Typology of Contour Tone Restrictions
This paper presents results of a survey of contour tones in 105 languages with lexical tone. Results indicate an implicational hierarchy of tone bearing ability, whereby long vowels are most likely to carry contour tones, followed by syllables containing a short vowel plus a sonorant coda, followed by syllables containing a short vowel plus an obstruent coda, followed by open syllables containi...
متن کاملAmazonia and the Typology of Tone Systems
The typology of tone and word-prosodic systems in general has been of longstanding interest to theorists and field workers alike. Unfortunately, much of the early typologizing dates from a time when we did not have adequate understanding of the full range of tonal phenomena across languages, e.g. African and Asian tone systems figured centrally in such typologizing, e.g. Pike’s (1948) famous di...
متن کاملSituating Cognition within the Virtual World
Cognitive architectures and virtual environments have a long history of use within the cognitive science community; however, few studies have sought to combine the use of these technologies to support computational studies into embodied, extended, situated and distributed (EESD) cognition. Here, we explore the extent to which the ACT-R cognitive architecture and the Unity game engine can be use...
متن کاملSyntax and its Interfaces in L2 Grammars - Situating L1 effects
Studies on the first language (L1) acquisition of word order optionality (e.g. Krämer 2000) report a developmental disjunction between syntactic and interpretive knowledge. We find suggestive evidence for a similar disjunction in the second language (L2) acquisition of German optional word order, so-called scrambling. This study examines scrambling in advanced and near-native English-German and...
متن کاملSituating digital storytelling within African communities
We reflect on the methods, activities and perspectives we used to situate digital storytelling in two rural African communities in South Africa and Kenya. We demonstrate how in-depth ethnography in a village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and a design workshop involving participants from that village allowed us to design a prototype mobile digital storytelling system suited to the needs of...
